Overview

Where instructors and admins go to build, manage, and publish courses. Your organization's own courses plus platform-wide courses all in one place.

What is the Courses section?

The Courses section is the hub for course authorship and management. It's where instructors build new courses from scratch, edit existing ones, and decide who can see and take them. Admins see the same tools, plus organization-wide controls.

You can access Courses from the Manage menu on your dashboard, but only if your role has permission. Members don't see this section — they see Courses only as a catalog of courses to join.

Two types of courses

There are two distinct categories of courses:

Your organization's custom courses

Courses created by you or your instructors specifically for your organization. Only your members can see them. You decide the content, the difficulty, the pace, and who's allowed to take them.

Platform courses

Courses created by Intermediate Data Systems (the company behind My1Service) and distributed to organizations based on their subscription plan. These courses cover common topics like compliance, productivity, and professional development. Your members can take them just like custom courses, but you don't edit or manage them — they're read-only to you.

The course list

When you open Courses, you see a list of every course your organization has access to. Each course card shows:

  • The course title and thumbnail
  • Whether it's a custom course (authored by your organization) or a platform course
  • The number of members currently taking it
  • Publication status (draft, published, archived)
  • Quick actions (edit, duplicate, archive, view stats)

Creating a new course

Click the + New Course button to start building a new course from scratch. You'll be taken to the course editor, where you can:

  • Add a title, description, and thumbnail image
  • Create modules and add content (video, slides, text)
  • Write questions to assess learning
  • Set grading rules and pass marks
  • Invite instructors to co-author
  • Publish to your members

See Course Editor for the complete step-by-step walkthrough.

Editing an existing course

Click any course card to open it in the editor. You can change everything — title, content, questions, grading — even after publishing. Changes take effect immediately for new learners, but existing learners keep their progress.

Editing published courses
If you edit a course people are actively taking, they might see content change mid-course. It's generally safer to update courses when no one is enrolled, or to create a new version if changes are major.

Duplicating a course

If you want to create a course similar to an existing one, duplicate it. You get a copy with all the same content, modules, and questions. Then customize it for your new purpose. Hover over any course card and click the menu button to find the duplicate option.

Archiving a course

Archived courses are hidden from the catalog — members can't see them or join them — but they don't disappear. If you ever need to bring an old course back, you can unarchive it. Existing members who took the course before archiving can still view their completion records.

Course permissions

Only instructors and admins can access the Courses section. Within that:

  • Instructors: Can create, edit, and publish courses, but only ones they author or are invited to co-author.
  • Admins: Can see and edit all courses, plus manage access and view organization-wide course stats.

Course statistics

Click on any course card to see stats about how many people are taking it, how many have completed it, average scores, and common stumbling blocks. These insights help you refine course content over time.

Course access controls

When you publish a course, you decide who can see it:

  • Publish to everyone — all members can discover and join it in the catalog
  • Publish to specific people — only invited members can access it
  • Keep it draft — no one can see it yet; it's just for you to edit

See Publishing for the full publishing workflow.

Your plan and course cap

Your organization's plan determines how many custom courses you can create. If you hit your limit, you'll need to archive older courses before creating new ones, or upgrade your plan. Contact your admin or reach out to support to check your limit and plan.

Courses are a team effort
You can invite other instructors to co-author courses with you. They can edit, add content, and grade without seeing your organization's other courses (unless they're admins).
