Grading
Configuring how courses are scored, setting pass marks, and grading free text answers.
What is the Grading tab?
The Grading tab controls:
- How the final score is calculated
- The pass mark (what score members need to pass)
- When members see their results (immediately or after you review)
- Whether members can retake the course
- How multiple attempts are scored
The pass mark
The pass mark is the minimum score members need to pass the course. Set it in the Grading tab. Common pass marks are 70% or 80%, but you decide.
When a member completes the course:
- If their score ≥ pass mark: They pass and earn a certificate
- If their score < pass mark: They fail. They might be able to retake it (see "Retakes" below)
Score calculation
The score is calculated from questions:
- Multiple choice questions are auto-scored instantly
- Free text questions are scored manually (see "Grading Free Text" below)
- Points from all questions are summed and divided by total possible points to get a percentage
For example: If the course has 100 total points and a member earns 75 points, their score is 75%.
Weighting questions
You can weight questions differently. Set different point values for different questions:
- Easier questions: 1 point each
- Harder questions: 5 points each
- A comprehensive final exam: 50 points
This lets you emphasize what matters most. Adjust points in the Questions tab.
When results are visible
You control when members see their results:
Immediate feedback (default)
Members see their score and results right after completing the course. This is good for learning — they get immediate feedback. However, multiple choice questions are auto-graded, so they see correct/incorrect answers immediately regardless of this setting.
After review
Members' results are hidden until you finish grading free text questions and manually release scores. Use this if you want to grade everything before anyone sees results, or if you want to provide comments before revealing scores.
Grading free text questions
Free text questions require manual grading. To grade a course:
- Go to Courses and click on the course
- Click View Responses or Grading
- You see a list of all members and their answers to free text questions
- Click each answer to read it and assign a score (0 to max points for that question)
- Add comments or feedback (optional but recommended)
- Save and move to the next answer
- Once all free text questions for a member are graded, their final score updates
Bulk grading
If many members are waiting for grading, you can grade them in bulk:
- Open the Grading view
- Filter by question (all members for one question)
- Score and comment on each answer
- Move to the next question and repeat
This workflow is faster than grading by member.
Partial credit
When grading free text questions, you award partial credit. Set the maximum points for the question (e.g., 10), then award any amount up to that maximum (e.g., give them 7 points for a mostly correct answer).
Retakes
You control whether members can retake the course:
- No retakes (default): Members take the course once. Their score is final.
- Unlimited retakes: Members can rejoin and retake the course as many times as they want. You decide how to score multiple attempts (best score, latest score, or average).
- Limited retakes: Members get 2, 3, or another set number of attempts.
Scoring multiple attempts
If you allow retakes, choose how multiple attempts are scored:
- Best score: The highest score across all attempts counts
- Latest score: Only the most recent attempt counts
- Average: The average of all attempts counts
“Best score” is most forgiving and encourages learning; “latest” or “average” are stricter.
Time limits on questions
You can set a time limit on individual questions or the entire course. If a member runs out of time, their current answers are submitted and graded. This is useful for high-stakes assessments.
Notification to members about grading
When you finish grading a member's free text questions, they're notified that results are ready. They can then view their score, see your feedback, and (if enabled) download their certificate.
Changing scores after grading
After you've graded and released scores, you can still adjust them:
- Go back to the grading view
- Click a member's answer and edit the score
- Save the change
- The member is notified of the score change
Viewing grading status
On the course overview, you see how many members have submitted answers to free text questions and how many you still need to grade. This helps you track grading progress.
Exporting grades
You can export all grades and member data as a CSV file for use in spreadsheets or your student information system. Click Export Grades in the Grading section.
